Bi-Parting Curtain
bi-parting curtain, split drape, center-opening curtain
What is a Bi-Parting Curtain?
A bi-parting curtain is a stage curtain composed of two panels that open from the center to both sides. It is the standard front curtain (house curtain / grand drape) in proscenium theaters. The curtain can be operated on a traveler track (motorized) or a line set (flying system).
How It Works
Two curtain panels are hung on a traveler track or a batten. When opened, the panels stack at the left and right sides of the proscenium, revealing the stage. When closed, the panels overlap at center (typically 100-200mm overlap) to prevent light leakage. Fabric styles include traditional tab top (pleated heading with tabs), grommet top (metal ring heading), and box pleated (formal, structured appearance).
Applications
- Front curtains (grand drapes): Main visual barrier between audience and stage
- Rear curtains: Separating stage from backstage
- Side masking: Covering wing areas
