What is a DMX Control?
DMX512 (Digital Multiplex) is the standard digital communication protocol used in entertainment technology to control lighting, effects, and increasingly, stage machinery. DMX allows a single controller to send commands to multiple devices over a single cable.
How It Works
DMX512 transmits up to 512 "channels" of digital data over a 5-pin or 3-pin XLR cable at 250 kbps. Each device is assigned a starting address and responds to its designated channels. For stage machinery, DMX channels can control motor speed (0-255 = stop to full speed), position (0-255 = full range of travel), and special functions (presets, effects). Modern extensions include sACN (E1.31, DMX over Ethernet with unlimited universes) and Art-Net (DMX over IP, widely used in touring).
