Fail-Safe Brake
fail-safe brake, stage motor brake, holding brake
What is a Fail-Safe Brake?
A fail-safe brake is a braking device that automatically engages (stops motion) when power is removed or lost. In stage machinery, every motorized axis must have a fail-safe brake to prevent uncontrolled movement during power failures or emergencies.
How It Works
The most common type is a spring-applied, electrically-released brake: Normal operation — electric current compresses the spring, releasing the brake → motor can turn. Power failure — spring expands, pressing friction plates → motor shaft locked. Emergency stop — power is cut → brake engages automatically. This design ensures the load cannot fall even if all electronics fail.
