Limit Switch

limit switch, stage position switch, hoist limit

What is a Limit Switch?

A limit switch is a position-sensing device that stops a motorized stage device at a predetermined point of travel. Every motorized hoist, lift, and curtain track uses limit switches to prevent over-travel and ensure safe operation within defined boundaries.

Key Components

Mechanical limit switchPhysical contact, adjustable position
Rotary encoderPrecise position feedback (digital)
Proximity sensorNon-contact detection (metal target)
Magnetic switchReed switch with magnet actuator

Key Concepts

Upper limitPrevents over-hoisting
Lower limitPrevents over-lowering
Final limitBackup safety limit (separate from working limit)
Deceleration limitTriggers slow-down before final position

Related Standards

  • All limit switches must be wired to the safety circuit, not just the control program (per EN 17206).
