Load Capacity

load capacity, rated load, stage hoist capacity

What is a Load Capacity?

Load capacity (also called rated load or rated capacity) is the maximum weight a lifting device or rigging system is designed to safely carry during normal operation. It is the fundamental specification that determines what can be hung from a hoist, batten, or rigging point.

How It Works

Load capacity is calculated by the manufacturer based on motor power and gearbox ratio, wire rope or chain breaking strength, structural integrity of all load-bearing components, and the applicable safety factor (typically 8:1 to 10:1 for stage machinery). Formula: Safe Working Load (SWL) = Minimum Breaking Load ÷ Safety Factor.

Key Concepts

Rated LoadMaximum designed operating load
Safe Working Load (SWL)Maximum load under defined conditions
Breaking LoadLoad at which component failure occurs
Dynamic LoadAdditional forces during acceleration/deceleration
Static LoadLoad when the system is stationary
